In a note to his Bandcamp subscribers last week, Fly Anakin, leader of the Richmond underground rap crew Mutant Academy, wrote that he’s moving his music away from streaming services and that he plans to use Bandcamp exclusively for the foreseeable future: “Music is supposed to be personal and i’m taking back what’s mine.”

When you see it on the Billboard charts, the listing looks weird: “SpotemGottem Featuring Pooh Shiesty Or DaBaby.” It’s not “and.” It’s “or.” One or the other. Choose your fighter. There’s a reason for this. “Beat Box,” a song from the 18-year-old Jacksonville rapper SpotemGottem, is going through different incarnations so quickly that Billboard doesn’t quite have the institutional vocabulary to describe what’s going on.

Last year, young underground greats Pink Siifu and Fly Anakin got together and made the collaborative album FlySiifu’s. On the surface, they made for an odd couple. Pink Siifu is a rootless experimenter who’s spent time in a lot of cities and who makes wild, crackly music that draws on experimental music and punk rock. Fly Anakin leads the Richmond, Virginia crew Mutant Academy, and his music is more focused and straightforward. But on FlySiifu’s, a loose concept album about two clerks at a fictional record store, Siifu and Anakin found an extremely cool expansive stoner-rap common ground. And now, on a new EP, they’ve done it again.
