Long-running Illinois alt-rock band Local H are releasing their new covers album Local H’s Awesome Quarantine Mix-Tape #3 next month. Last month, they shared their take on Looking Glass’ 1972 chart-topper “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl).” And today, they’re back with another track from the project, a rendition of Fountains Of Wayne’s wistful 2003 gem “Hackensack.”

One of the noteworthy musicians to die from COVID-19 complications was Adam Schlesinger, the power-pop mastermind who had a hand in Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy, and a bunch of musically inclined TV and movie projects such as That Thing You Do! and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. There were abundant tributes to Schlesinger upon his death last April, including a couple on this very website. A number of noteworthy musicians covered his songs, and some others contributed to a tribute album. And now, a year later, he’s getting a full-on all-star virtual tribute concert.

Like 85% of 21st century movie characters, Josie And The Pussycats started out as comic book characters. Josie McCoy (first known as Josie Jones, then Josie James) was a teenage girl, part of the Archie Comics universe; she had her own comic beginning in 1963, in which she had typical teenage adventures with two friends, Melody Valentine and Valerie Brown. In 1969, they formed a band. A year later, during the 1970-71 TV season, Hanna-Barbera Studios turned the comic into an animated series. (N.B.: Valerie was the first Black female character in a Saturday morning cartoon show.)
