In a recent chat with Joe Rock on Long Island’s 102.3 WBAB, TOTO’s Steve Lukather opened up about the exciting album he’s crafting alongside Alex Van Halen, the legendary drummer of VAN HALEN. This project aims to honor the late Eddie Van Halen, featuring previously unreleased tracks from the band’s vault.
Lukather emphasized his role as a co-producer rather than a performer, stating, “I’m not playing on it, I’m not writing, I’m not singing, there’s no TOTO fingerprints.” He clarified that the album will not follow the traditional VAN HALEN format, as it seeks to capture the essence of Eddie’s artistry without simply replacing the iconic frontmen.
Currently in the early stages, Lukather described the material as complex and hinted at a progressive sound, saying, “These songs were a little bit more complex… out-RUSHing RUSH a little bit.” He’s been in constant communication with Alex, discussing the direction of the album and the search for a vocalist to complete the project.
This collaboration not only reflects their musical history but also their deep friendship, with Lukather noting, “I understand what it’s all about, and I have a great deal of respect for everybody.” Fans can look forward to a heartfelt tribute that honors Eddie’s legacy while showcasing the creative synergy between two rock legends.
