Speak Easy: Alabama-Born Alternative Rock Band Brings Its Sound to Nashville

Speak Easy is a rising alternative rock band with Southern Alabama roots, a Troy University origin story, and a growing presence in Nashville’s independent music scene. Built on raw energy, introspective lyrics, gritty guitars, and emotionally charged performances, Speak Easy is the kind of band that reminds listeners why rock music still matters — not just as a sound, but as a community.

iRockNashville is proud to feature Speak Easy as one of our first Founding Spotlight Artists.

Formed by friends at Troy University, Speak Easy began as a campus cover band before developing into a serious creative force with original music, a loyal following, and a sound that refuses to sit neatly inside one category. The band’s current lineup features Jack Anderson on vocals, Nate Braisted on guitar, Tate MacNicol on bass, and Sam Strickland on drums.

Blending elements of garage rock, indie rock, alternative rock, and modern rock, Speak Easy has built a sound that is both familiar and fresh. Their music carries the punch of a live rock band, the emotional pull of honest songwriting, and the kind of anthemic hooks that stay with listeners after the song ends.

Speak Easy

From Troy University to the Nashville Rock Scene

Speak Easy’s story began in Troy, Alabama, where the band grew from student musicians playing covers into a group with its own voice, identity, and creative direction. Their time in Troy helped shape not only their sound, but also their sense of community.

The band became known for energetic live performances, house shows, and a devoted local following. Much of that early community formed around the band’s Troy home, nicknamed the Hell House, a place that became more than just a house. It became part of Speak Easy’s story — a second home, a creative space, and a gathering place for the people who believed in the band before the wider world started paying attention.

That Troy chapter helped prepare Speak Easy for its next major step: relocating to Nashville, Tennessee.

For a young alternative rock band, Nashville represents both opportunity and challenge. Speak Easy has already played shows in Nashville and made connections with other bands in the city. One of those early Nashville moments came during a new artists night at The Basement, the original and legendary Nashville venue known for giving emerging artists a real stage. After the show, Scott, owner of iRockNashville.com, spoke with Grimey, owner of The Basement, who praised how strong the band sounded that night and expressed interest in having them back again.

That kind of response matters. In a city filled with talented musicians and hungry young bands, Speak Easy is already turning heads in the rooms where Nashville music still happens up close, loud, and real.

Now, the move gives them a chance to sharpen their craft, reach new audiences, and step fully into one of the world’s most important music cities.

The Debut EP: Hearsay

In April 2025, Speak Easy released their debut EP, Hearsay, marking the band’s first official collection of original songs. The five-track project runs approximately 22 minutes and introduces listeners to the band’s gritty, melodic, and emotionally driven approach to modern rock. Recorded at Technical Earth Recorders in Montgomery and produced by acclaimed engineer Robert Shimp, Hearsay captures Speak Easy at an important creative moment — a band stepping beyond its beginnings and putting its own sound into the world. The EP moves through different shades of rock influence, with nods to alternative, garage, indie, and heavier guitar-driven sounds. But what makes Hearsay stand out is not just its style. It is the feeling behind it. Speak Easy sounds like a band that has worked through the rough drafts, the false starts, the noise, and the pressure in order to find something clearer, stronger, and more fully their own. That work has already connected with listeners. After the release of Hearsay, Speak Easy began gaining attention on streaming platforms, including hundreds of monthly listeners on Spotify, while continuing to build momentum through live shows and word of mouth.

Speak Easy

A Band Built on Energy, Honesty, and Community

Speak Easy is not just a band name. It is also a mindset. The band’s identity is rooted in unity, inclusion, and the belief that music can bring people together across scenes, tastes, and backgrounds. Their listeners are not limited to one narrow rock audience. Speak Easy has drawn interest from fans of alternative rock, metal, pop, rap, indie, and other styles because the band’s music carries something bigger than genre. There is an honesty in their sound. There is a hunger in their performances. There is also a deep appreciation for the communities that helped them get this far. As Speak Easy moves forward in Nashville, the band carries the spirit of Troy with them — the house shows, the friendships, the local supporters, the first songs, the first EP, and the people who showed up before anything was guaranteed. That kind of beginning matters.

What Comes Next for Speak Easy

Speak Easy is entering a major new season. With Hearsay now out in the world, the band has been working toward new singles, more live shows, merchandise, and a full-length album expected in the future. Their move to Nashville signals more than a change of location. It is a statement of intent. Speak Easy is here to grow, to compete, to connect, and to find out just how far this band can go. For fans of independent rock, alternative rock, and Nashville’s growing local music scene, Speak Easy is a band worth watching closely. Unfiltered. Honest. Loud. And ready to be heard.
iRockNashville is excited to welcome Speak Easy as a Founding Spotlight Artist.
