Nektar Faces Name Dispute as They Reclaim Their Prog Legacy

The legendary UK prog band Nektar is making waves once again, but not without a few bumps in the road. After the release of their 2020 album, The Other Side, the band is facing a legal challenge from another group claiming the Nektar name, complicating their plans for a European tour.

Following the passing of lead vocalist Roye Albrighton in 2016, the future of Nektar seemed uncertain. However, co-founder Derek ‘Mo’ Moore has rallied a new lineup, including original members and alumni, to breathe new life into the band. Their latest album showcases a vibrant mix of classic prog sounds and fresh energy, with much of the material dating back to the band’s early days.

Moore expressed excitement about the new lineup, stating, “We just clicked again. It was like going back 40 years.” The album explores themes of loss and longing, serving as a tribute to Albrighton and their late soundman, Vinny Schmid. The title track extends an epic 18 minutes, embodying the band’s signature style.

As they gear up for their U.S. tour, Nektar is determined to resolve the naming dispute. “We’re spending money on lawyers right now,” Moore shared, emphasizing the confusion among fans as both bands operate under the same name. Despite these challenges, Nektar remains optimistic about their future and the music they continue to create.
