The Hives, the iconic garage rock band from Fagersta, Sweden, have made waves in the music scene with their infectious single, “Hate to Say I Told You So.” Originally released in 2000, the track has seen a resurgence in popularity, proving that sometimes, a song just needs the right push to shine.

Initially, producer Pelle Gunnerfeldt dismissed the song as “boring trite rock,” likening it to a “Swedish ZZ Top.” However, after some sonic tweaks and a remix session with lead vocalist Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, the track transformed into a powerhouse anthem that captivated listeners.

In February 2002, the re-released single propelled The Hives into the limelight, aided by a memorable performance on Top of the Pops. Almqvist recalls the moment fondly, stating, “We were an underground punk-rock band; a hit in our world was 500 people having our record.” The band quickly found themselves in a bidding war with major labels, eventually signing a lucrative deal with Universal Music.

Now, nearly 26 years later, “Hate to Say I Told You So” remains a staple in their setlist and has amassed over 303 million streams on Spotify. The Hives have proven that sometimes, a “fairly monotonous” song can lead to extraordinary success.
