Tony Iommi Reflects on Wild Days with Bill Ward

In a recent interview, legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi shared a wild story from his days with the band, revealing a prank that went too far involving drummer Bill Ward. As Iommi prepares for the release of his upcoming solo album, From the Dark, on October 23, he reminisced about the infamous incident that left Ward with third-degree burns.

While working on the 1980 album Heaven and Hell, Iommi and Ward had a playful tradition of using rubbing alcohol for a harmless joke. However, during one recording session, Iommi accidentally poured too much on Ward before lighting him on fire. The result was chaotic, with Ward rolling on the floor in pain while producer Martin Birch panicked.

“We never did it again after that,” Iommi admitted, reflecting on the seriousness of the situation. Thankfully, the guitarist is now channeling his creativity into his solo work, collaborating with vocalist Jorn Lande and featuring a guest appearance from Queen’s Brian May. Iommi emphasized that this time around, there’s no pressure, allowing him to enjoy the creative process.
