Amon Amarth’s Johan Hegg Sets the Record Straight on Viking Myths

In a recent interview, Johan Hegg, the frontman of Amon Amarth, took the time to debunk some of the most persistent myths surrounding Vikings. Known for their fierce reputation, Hegg reveals that the reality is quite different from popular belief.

Contrary to the image of Vikings as dirty, unkempt warriors, Hegg emphasizes that they were actually known for their impeccable hygiene. “Vikings would wash once a week, which was quite rare in Medieval Europe,” he explains. They took pride in grooming their beards and maintaining their appearance.

Hegg also addresses the iconic horned helmets, stating that this image is a 19th-century fabrication. Historical evidence shows that very few Viking helmets have been found, and those that exist do not feature horns. Instead, Viking society was structured and had laws that were among the earliest written in the world.
