Metallica’s ‘Blackened’ is not just a song; it’s an apocalyptic anthem that has resonated with fans since its debut in 1988. The opening track of the album …And Justice for All, ‘Blackened’ dives deep into themes of environmental destruction and nuclear winter, showcasing the band’s lyrical prowess.

Originally crafted by bassist Jason Newsted, the song’s iconic riff emerged during casual jam sessions with frontman James Hetfield. Newsted recalls the moment fondly, stating, “Dude, that riff’s good enough to open our album.” This collaboration marked a significant milestone for both the band and Newsted, who had just joined Metallica.

As the song progresses, it features complex tempo changes and a blistering pace, averaging 190 beats per minute. Drummer Lars Ulrich has noted the challenges of keeping up with its intricate structure during live performances. “You have to really stay on top of all the starts and stops,” he explained.

Fast forward to today, ‘Blackened’ remains a fan favorite, having been performed over 550 times. Its legacy continues to inspire, even leading to a reimagined version during the pandemic, showcasing the band’s ability to adapt and evolve.
