In a recent episode of the “100 Songs That Define Heavy Metal” podcast, Geezer Butler, the legendary bassist and primary lyricist of Black Sabbath, shared his thoughts on the band’s groundbreaking album, “Heaven and Hell.” The album, which marked the introduction of Ronnie James Dio as the lead vocalist, took the rock world by storm, surprising even its creators.

Butler reminisced about the challenges faced with the band’s previous frontman, Ozzy Osbourne, noting that the creative process had become strained. He expressed relief at Dio’s arrival, highlighting how the new singer brought fresh energy and collaboration to the songwriting process. “It was great because Ronnie could express his ideas musically, something we struggled with before,” Butler explained.

Reflecting on the album’s unexpected success, he admitted, “The whole thing surprised us. We believed in it, but getting everyone else to believe in it was another thing.” The nearly seven-minute-long title track became a staple on U.S. radio, defying expectations and proving the band’s resilience.

As Black Sabbath continues to be celebrated for their contributions to rock music, Butler’s insights remind us of the band’s storied history and the pivotal moments that shaped their legacy.
