Les Holroyd Reflects on Barclay James Harvest’s Controversial Track

Les Holroyd, the bassist and vocalist of Barclay James Harvest (BJH), recently opened up about one of the band’s most controversial moments involving their 1977 track, “Poor Man’s Moody Blues.” During an interview, he expressed his discomfort with the song, which was a response to comparisons with The Moody Blues.

Holroyd reminisced about BJH’s early days, where they were free to develop their unique sound without much interference. He acknowledged that the music industry at the time was not prepared for the progressive rock wave that BJH was part of.

Despite the success of their album “Gone To Earth,” which featured the hit song, Holroyd admitted that he never found the diss track funny or clever. He recalled an awkward encounter with The Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward, who was not pleased with BJH’s take on their iconic song, “Nights In White Satin.” Holroyd stated, “For me, it was never funny or clever in the first place. I wish we’d never done it.” Nevertheless, he remains proud of BJH’s musical journey and their commitment to authenticity.
