In a heartfelt moment that fans will not soon forget, Ritchie Blackmore reunited with Deep Purple on August 12, marking his first performance with the band in over 30 years. The legendary guitarist joined his former bandmates on stage to perform the iconic track “Smoke on the Water,” bringing the crowd to their feet.

Frontman Ian Gillan welcomed Blackmore back with open arms, declaring, “It was an absolute pleasure to have back onstage the founder member, the great legend, the immortal, Ritchie Blackmore!” The atmosphere was electric, filled with nostalgia and emotion as Blackmore reflected on the significance of the reunion.

Speaking to Guitar Player, Blackmore shared, “It was very moving because I went on very quickly and had to play immediately. I couldn’t warm up, but I wasn’t there to be playing correct notes. I was there to see old friends I hadn’t seen in 40 years.” He acknowledged the weight of the moment, stating, “We realized it could be the last time we see each other, maybe.”

Despite facing health challenges in recent years, Blackmore’s return to the stage was a testament to the enduring bond he shares with his bandmates. He emphasized the importance of simplicity in his performance, focusing on the joy of reconnecting rather than technical perfection. “Everyone was like we were in the army all along the Western front and we were all getting together again. Very emotional moment,” he concluded.
