In a fascinating twist of rock history, Brian May and Eddie Van Halen teamed up in April 1983 for a mini-album called Star Fleet Project. This collaboration, born out of a friendship that sparked back in 1978, was not for a high-profile supergroup but rather a fun project inspired by a kids’ TV show theme.

May first witnessed Van Halen’s electrifying performance in Munich, where he was left in awe. The two guitar legends finally found the time to jam together, bringing along a stellar lineup that included REO Speedwagon’s Alan Gratzer and bassist Phil Chen. The result was a unique blend of rock and playful experimentation.

With the lead track being a reimagined version of the Star Fleet theme, the recording sessions were described as exhilarating and liberating. May recalls the atmosphere as one of camaraderie and joy, a stark contrast to the pressures of their main bands. The mini-album has now been reissued, showcasing the magic of two iconic guitarists having fun in the studio.
