Tom Morello Reflects on Rage Against The Machine’s Bold Lollapalooza Protest

Tom Morello recently reminisced about one of the most audacious moments in rock history: Rage Against The Machine’s naked protest at Lollapalooza in 1993. On July 18, the band took the stage at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, baring it all to make a powerful statement against censorship.

Morello shared that the band walked on stage with black tape over their mouths and the letters ‘P-M-R-C’ painted on their chests, symbolizing their opposition to the Parents Music Resource Center. For a full 15 minutes, they stood naked, refusing to play a single note, which created a mix of euphoria and tension among the audience.

“For the first five minutes, it’s euphoria. For the next five minutes, it’s a strange stand-off,” Morello recalled. As the crowd began to realize the gravity of the protest, things turned hostile, with quarters being thrown at the band. “Then we leave without playing a single song, and there’s a murderous outpouring from the crowd!” he added.

Morello also humorously noted how he ended up hiding on Fishbone’s tour bus, still naked, watching Star Wars as the police searched for them. This iconic moment remains a testament to the band’s commitment to their message and the power of rock music as a form of protest.
