In a candid interview with MOJO magazine, Phil Collins opened up about his past battles with alcohol addiction, revealing how fellow rock legend Eric Clapton played a pivotal role in his recovery. Collins, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this November, shared that he was once close to death due to his struggles with alcohol.

Collins recounted his experience at Clapton’s Crossroads Centre rehab facility in Antigua, where he was encouraged to seek help. Although he planned to stay for six weeks, he left after a month to fulfill tour commitments. A nurse handed him a note before his departure, warning, “If you have a drink, you will die.” Sadly, Collins admitted to having a glass of wine shortly after.

The former Genesis frontman reflected on the loneliness that led him to drink, particularly following his divorce in 2006. He described nights spent staring at the Swiss skies, feeling isolated and haunted by his choices. Despite the challenges, Collins emphasized his gratitude for overcoming these dark times.

As he prepares for his induction ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on November 14, Collins has opted not to perform, citing the need to be in top shape for such an important event.
