Ann Wilson, the powerhouse vocalist of Heart, recently opened up about the band’s tumultuous journey through the ’80s during an appearance on the Magnificent Others podcast with Billy Corgan. She described this period as a ‘devil’s bargain’ for the band, which faced significant challenges after their success in the ’70s.

During this time, Heart signed with Capitol Records, a move that Wilson felt was necessary to revive their career. ‘We had a record contract with Capitol at that point,’ she recalled. ‘It was the thing that picked us up from not being able to be arrested.’

Despite the resurgence that followed, including hits like ‘What About Love’ and ‘These Dreams,’ Wilson expressed regret about the reliance on outside songwriters. ‘It was a complete devil’s bargain,’ she noted, reflecting on how the songs often lacked the emotional depth she craved.

In hindsight, Wilson admitted she struggled to grasp the musical landscape of the ’80s. ‘I would have spent more time listening to the radio,’ she said, wishing to connect more with the essence of the era’s music.

Heart’s journey through the ’80s is a testament to their resilience and adaptability, and Wilson’s insights provide a fascinating look into the complexities of navigating fame and artistic integrity.
