Phil Collins Initially Hesitant to Lead Genesis

In a fascinating revelation, guitarist Steve Hackett shared insights into Phil Collins’ reluctance to step into the spotlight as Genesis’ lead singer. Back in 1975, when Peter Gabriel departed from the band, Collins was already an established drummer, yet he hesitated to embrace the role of frontman.

Hackett recounted Collins’ mindset during that pivotal time, stating, “Phil very much wanted to be a drummer. He believed it was a more respectable gig.” Despite having performed on stage before, Collins was initially resistant to the idea of singing.

However, a chance moment in a van changed everything. As Hackett recalled, he encouraged Collins after hearing him sing, noting, “You’ve got a really good voice. You sound a bit like Steve Winwood.” This encouragement gradually built Collins’ confidence, eventually leading him to audition for the role.

Interestingly, Genesis had considered several other candidates before Collins took the leap. It was during a recording session that Collins, feeling frustrated, decided to give it a shot. A nearby record label executive overheard him and declared, “Sounds like you’ve found your lead singer, chaps.” And just like that, history was made.
