Mastodon Celebrates Geezer Butler’s Guest Spot on ‘Marrow Deep’

Mastodon is gearing up for the release of their highly anticipated album, Marrow Deep, hitting shelves on August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. The excitement is palpable, especially with the legendary Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath lending his talents to the track “The Vanishing.” In a recent interview, bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders shared how surreal it felt to collaborate with a musical icon.

Reflecting on the experience, Sanders noted, “What a cool moment!” The band had previously toured with Black Sabbath in 2005, and the opportunity to work with Butler has been a dream come true for them. He described the moment as a full-circle experience, highlighting the inspiration they draw from artists like Butler and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme.

Butler’s contribution isn’t just a cameo; he recorded an incredible bass intro that Sanders claims is the highlight of the album. The collaboration was done remotely, and while the band hasn’t met Butler face-to-face yet, they hope to connect during their upcoming tour.

Mastodon will embark on The Poisonous Weapons Tour starting September 16 in Orlando, with support from Deafheaven and Alcest. This tour marks a significant moment for the band as they navigate their first album without founding guitarist Brent Hinds, who tragically passed away in 2025.
