Guns N’ Roses Video Director Shares Dark Concept for ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’

In a recent episode of the Appetite for Distortion podcast, Nigel Dick, the director behind some of Guns N’ Roses’ iconic music videos, unveiled the original concept for the legendary ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ video. The idea, which he described as ‘very dark,’ was conceived during a lunch meeting with Axl Rose and the band’s then-manager, Alan Niven.

According to Dick, the initial vision involved Axl in a mental institution, gazing through a window at his girlfriend on the other side. However, this concept was ultimately deemed too grim for the band’s image. Dick noted that it’s common for artists to explore multiple ideas before settling on a final version, often influenced by factors such as budget and time constraints.

Having worked closely with the band during their formative years, Dick was well aware of their creative direction. He reminisced about his collaborations on the videos for their early hits from Appetite for Destruction and GN’R Lies. The band later transitioned to working with Andy Morahan for their subsequent projects.

Interestingly, Axl Rose had another striking idea for the ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ video, which involved a narrative about a woman and her baby, but it was also rejected. These insights provide a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind one of rock’s most beloved tracks.
