Hyperpop used to sound so weird. This was presumably part of its appeal for fans of the style, that sense of transgressing the average listener’s comfort zone. Even before the terminology developed, the microgenre now known as hyperpop presented an extreme take on pop music that sometimes blurred the lines between humans and their machines. Early PC Music singles like Hannah Diamond’s “Attachment” had me wincing the way you might upon encountering an extremely lifelike android. Charli XCX’s most aggressive collaborations with SOPHIE and A. G. Cook were like listening in on broadcasts from an unsettling future. The rapid spread of glitchy, distorted, perennially revved-up duo 100 gecs two years ago largely amounted to people playing their songs for friends and — with some combination of excitement, bemusement, and horror — essentially saying, “Can you believe they are seriously making music like this?”

Back in 2018, Benny Blanco released his debut solo single “Eastside,” which featured Khalid and Halsey. The song was a hit, breaking the top 10 on the Hot 100; Halsey performed it when she was on SNL. Now, however, the trio — along with co-writer Ed Sheeran, and all the labels involved — are being sued by songwriters who claim “Eastside” was a ripoff. (This is not Sheeran’s first run-in with such lawsuits.)

“Mood” was a moment. Even before 24kGoldn and Iann Dior’s collaboration spent eight weeks atop Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart between October and January, it was a significant milestone in pop music’s ongoing metamorphosis. 24kGoldn and Iann Dior are ostensibly rappers, and their sing-song stylings make sense within the context of the modern hip-hop mainstream. But thanks to an influx of SoundCloud-rap infiltrators who’ve taken a lot from pop-punk, emo, and nu-metal, the modern hip-hop mainstream has quite a bit of rock in it, hence the snappy chord-based guitar riff that was as much of a hook as anything these guys sang. On that note, like hits from forebears like Juice WRLD, Post Malone, and Lil Uzi Vert, “Mood” was self-evidently a pop song, infectiously catchy and irresistibly propulsive. In a historic feat, it topped Billboard‘s Hot Alternative Songs, Hot Rap Songs, and Hot 100 charts all at once.

There are two types of people in this world: those who plan their tattoos at length and those who just go for whatever. Not so surprisingly, the latter tend to walk out with the best stories.
