French Canadian artist Geneviève Castrée, who released some great music under the names Ô Paon and Woelv, died of pancreatic cancer in 2016, just a year after giving birth to her first daughter with husband Phil Elverum. Elverum went on to release powerful Mount Eerie albums like A Crow Looked At Me and Now Only memorializing Castrée and his grief over her loss. And now Castrée is being remembered with Ô, a tribute compilation on which friends, collaborators, and admirers including Elverum, Thou, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Karl Blau, and Nicholas Krgovich pay their respects to Castrée and her music by covering Ô Paon songs. Stream it below.

The Nashville power trio Yautja have a guttural, nasty take on metal. They play with the speed and ferocity of a hardcore band, but their riffs have sludge all over them, and their vocals are pure swamp-monster shit. In their hammering onslaught, you can hear echoes of early Mastodon, and that’s high praise. The three members of the band are all busy people, and they’ve played in bands like Thou, Coliseum, and Mutilation Rites. Singer/guitarist Shelby Poole also plays drums in the hardcore band Thirdface, who just released a motherfucker of a debut album earlier this month. And now Yautja have unveiled plans to come back with an album of their own.

Heavy metal has long been a scene of tackling societal issues, and political stances are frequently taken by songwriters in the genre. While it’s undeniable that some have created issues, most notably the black-metal community’s tendency to lean into neo-Nazi ideals, countless musicians are working to confront systemic racism through their songs. Take a look […]

I started Stereogum in 2002 with a LiveJournal and a dream (to get free CDs). Seriously though, I started this site to discuss new music with strangers on the internet. Without all of you who comment thoughtfully on our features, send us hot tips, and aggressively point out our typos, this would be a really…

Nirvana fucking ruled. Krist Novoselic might be out here definding Trump these days, but 30 years ago, he was in a good band. Louisiana sludge-metal warriors Thou have always known this. Over the years, Thou have released a whole lot of Nirvana covers. Sometimes, those covers have been relatively easy to find, as with the […]
