Before System Of A Down became a metal powerhouse, there was Soil, a band that laid the groundwork for what would become a legendary career. Former members David Hakopyan and Domingo Laranio recently shared their memories of this early project, which only played one show in 1994 at Fais Do-Do in Los Angeles.

Hakopyan recalls a chaotic moment during their performance when guitarist Daron Malakian fell off the stage, completely immersed in the intensity of the music. This incident marked a pivotal moment for the band, as it was the last time they would perform together before transitioning to System Of A Down.

Soil’s brief existence was filled with creativity and camaraderie, as the band members drew from their diverse influences, blending the sounds of Slayer and Frank Zappa. Their unique style was evident even in their early jams, which were characterized by wild riffs and passionate lyrics. However, the band ultimately disbanded due to personal circumstances, with members moving on to new projects.

Despite their short-lived journey, the impact of Soil’s music and the friendships formed during that time continue to resonate with the members, who look back fondly on their experiences. As they reminisce about their beginnings, it’s clear that Soil played a crucial role in shaping the future of one of metal’s most iconic bands.
