Rush is taking a trip down memory lane as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of their groundbreaking album, Signals. Released in 1982, this album marked a pivotal moment for the band, showcasing their evolution into the synth-heavy sound that defined much of the 80s.

During the recording process, the trio—Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart—faced significant tension over their new musical direction. They were determined to avoid repeating the success of Moving Pictures, striving instead for innovation. The band’s experience watching the Space Shuttle Columbia launch in 1981 profoundly influenced the album, inspiring tracks like ‘Countdown’ that captured the awe of that moment.

As they navigated the challenges of incorporating synthesizers and shorter song structures, Rush remained committed to their artistic growth. Lifeson emphasized the importance of progress, stating, ‘We always need to go somewhere else. We always wanted to evolve.’

With its blend of rock and new wave influences, Signals not only alienated some long-time fans but also opened the door for a new era in Rush’s storied career. As they look back, it’s clear that this album was a bold step into the future, setting the stage for the band’s continued success.
