The Damned, the pioneering UK punk band, are reminiscing about their groundbreaking tour of America, which marked a significant moment in punk history. Known for being the first UK punk band to release a single, their debut ‘New Rose’ hit the shelves on October 22, 1976, and just six months later, they took the US by storm.

Starting their American journey at the iconic CBGB in New York on April 7, 1977, the band played two electrifying sets, opening with ‘I Feel Alright’ and closing with ‘So Messed Up.’ Drummer Rat Scabies recalls the vibrant energy of New York, describing it as a scene straight out of a movie.

However, the experience was not without its quirks. The band was taken aback by the casual atmosphere at CBGB, where fans were munching on pizza while watching the show. This led to a memorable moment during their second night at the Rathskeller in Boston, where they brought tables on stage and even joined the audience in a pizza break!

As they wrapped up their tour at The Starwood in Hollywood and Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, the band faced a financial crunch. They cleverly set up a collection box on stage, humorously labeled ‘If you want rid of these “damned limeys” give generously to the fly-them-back-to-the-UK fund,’ which ultimately helped them return home.
