In a pivotal moment for rock history, Rick Wakeman faced a monumental decision in July 1969. At just 20 years old, the talented session musician was torn between joining David Bowie’s band and the progressive rock giants, Yes.

Wakeman, who had already made a name for himself with his impressive Mellotron skills, was approached by both artists on the same day. Bowie, still on the rise, had been impressed by Wakeman’s work on the iconic track “Space Oddity,” while Yes was looking for a new keyboardist after Tony Kaye’s departure.

Reflecting on the decision, Wakeman recalled the dilemma: “David was my biggest influence ever. I love playing his music, but with Yes, I could grow and contribute more creatively.” Ultimately, he chose Yes, a decision he later described as “fucking huge” in retrospect.

Fortunately, Bowie was supportive of Wakeman’s choice, acknowledging it as the right one. This decision not only shaped Wakeman’s career but also solidified Yes’s sound during their formative years.
