This past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante shared insights into the origins of extreme metal drumming, highlighting his experiences with the 1980s hardcore/metal project STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH (S.O.D.). Benante explained how his work on S.O.D.’s track ‘Milk’ helped shape the blast beat, a fast-paced drumming technique that has become a staple in genres like black metal and grindcore.

In an engaging conversation with Steve Harkins of TalkShopLive, Benante reminisced about how he was inspired to master double-bass drumming. He credited classic bands such as MOTÖRHEAD and JUDAS PRIEST, but it was ACCEPT’s 1983 hit ‘Fast As A Shark’ that truly ignited his passion. “It was the fastest double kick at the time, and I was determined to learn it,” Benante recalled, laughing as he recounted his audition with ANTHRAX where he confidently played the track.

Benante’s reflections not only celebrate the legacy of these iconic bands but also underscore the evolution of drumming techniques in heavy music. His contributions to the genre, particularly through S.O.D., have left an indelible mark on the metal scene.
