In a surprising twist of fate, ZZ Top made their long-awaited debut on late night television on May 18, 1986, performing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Despite the massive success of their 1983 album, Eliminator, this marked their first appearance on the small screen, showcasing their unique style.

Promoting their 1985 album, Afterburner, the band opted for a memorable performance of horn-driven renditions of classics like “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Tush,” backed by Doc Severinsen and the NBC Orchestra. The playful atmosphere was palpable, with Severinsen donning a fake beard and sunglasses to match the iconic ZZ Top look.

ZZ Top’s manager, Bill Ham, was known for his tight control over the band’s media presence, which likely contributed to the delay in their television debut. He believed in maintaining the band’s mystique, a strategy that paid off during their early years. However, as the music landscape evolved, so did ZZ Top, eventually becoming the video stars we know from the MTV era.

Fans are still reminiscing about this iconic moment, especially after the recent losses of bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. Their legacy continues to inspire, and this performance remains a cherished piece of rock history.
