Aidan Mullen, a former guitar tech for Metallica, recently opened up about his harrowing experience surviving the tragic bus crash in 1986 that claimed the life of bassist Cliff Burton. Speaking on the Beardo and Weirdo Podcast, Mullen recounted the terrifying moments of the accident that left him trapped alongside Burton.

At the time of the crash in Sweden, Mullen was relatively new to the crew and had just begun to bond with Burton. He vividly described how the bus hit black ice, spun, and flipped, with Mullen waking up just before the chaos unfolded. “I’ll never forget it for as long as I live,” he shared.

As the bus overturned, Mullen found himself pinned under debris, struggling to breathe. He credited Metallica’s production manager, Bobby Schneider, with saving his life, as Schneider crawled through an escape hatch to locate him. Mullen recalled, “I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move… and then all of a sudden, things began moving around me.”

Despite his injuries, including broken toes and a dislocated shoulder, Mullen’s story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of life on the road. He fondly remembered his last night with Cliff, sharing laughs and drinks, unaware of the tragedy that was to come.
