In a recent interview with Baby Huey and Chasta on San Francisco’s 107.7 The Bone, Eric Kretz, the drummer for Stone Temple Pilots, shared his strong opinions on the use of artificial intelligence in music creation. Kretz expressed his disdain for AI as a songwriting tool, calling it ‘disgusting’ and emphasizing that it lacks the authenticity found in traditional music.

Kretz elaborated on how AI-generated music misses the subtle imperfections that make songs unique. He reminisced about the nuances in classic tracks, like a guitar slightly out of tune, which contribute to the emotional depth of music. ‘There’s something always missing,’ he stated, highlighting the importance of human touch in the creative process.

While acknowledging AI’s rapid advancements in various fields, including medicine and film, Kretz remains skeptical about its role in art. He warned that as AI technology evolves, it could lead to a future where audiences struggle to differentiate between real and AI-generated content. ‘It’s going to be weird,’ he noted, as AI-generated characters in films could create emotional connections with viewers despite lacking genuine human experiences.

Stone Temple Pilots continues to thrive with original members Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo, and Kretz, alongside singer Jeff Gutt. Fans can expect more from the band as they navigate the changing landscape of music.
