Scott Ian Reflects on ANTHRAX’s Heartbreaking Decision to Fire Joey Belladonna

In a recent episode of the podcast Naked Lunch, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian opened up about the band’s difficult decision to part ways with lead singer Joey Belladonna back in 1992. Ian described the choice as ‘heartbreaking,’ acknowledging that it was a collective decision made by the band at the time.

Reflecting on the past, Ian admitted, ‘In hindsight, I was wrong.’ He explained that the band felt they were moving in a different musical direction that they believed Belladonna couldn’t follow. However, he now recognizes that they could have taken more time to work through their differences.

Belladonna, who originally sang for ANTHRAX from 1984 to 1992, returned to the band in 2010, and Ian noted that their reunion has led to some of the best work the band has ever produced. ‘It’s been incredible,’ he said, highlighting the chemistry that reignited when Belladonna rejoined.

The conversation sheds light on the complexities of band dynamics and the emotional weight of such decisions. As Ian put it, ‘It sucks. Any time like that, you’re going through something like that in a band where you’re making that kind of change, it’s the hardest, worst, stressful — just heartbreaking.’
