In a recent chat with Jorge Botas of Portugal’s Metal Global, Eric ‘A.K.’ Knutson, the frontman of the legendary Arizona metal band FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, opened up about his approach to songwriting, particularly regarding the inclusion of personal opinions in his lyrics.

Knutson emphasized the importance of storytelling over political commentary, stating, “I try to just tell a story and let everybody make up their own mind.” He reflected on the age-old advice of avoiding discussions about religion and politics, noting that such topics can alienate fans and friends alike.

The vocalist shared a personal anecdote about his father’s friendships, highlighting how differing opinions can coexist without damaging relationships. He believes that respect should be granted until lost, regardless of differing views. “You can have your opinion. I’ll have my opinion,” he said, advocating for open dialogue and understanding.
