Marcus King Remembers Brent Hinds: A Brotherhood in Music

In a heartfelt reflection, modern blues rock sensation Marcus King has opened up about his deep friendship with the late Brent Hinds, known for his work with Mastodon. Speaking to Guitar World, King shared how their bond blossomed over nearly a decade, highlighting Hinds’ vibrant personality and musical genius.

“Man, I had Brent in my life for the better part of a decade. We became really good friends really quickly,” King recalled. Hinds even played a significant role in King’s life, serving as a groomsman at his wedding. Their conversations often veered into musical territory, where they would passionately discuss guitar solos, particularly those of Mark Knopfler.

King praised Hinds for his unique ability to blend chicken picking with metal, noting, “His playing style and his ability to bring chicken pickin’ into the metal realm… I was always really inspired by that.” The two collaborated on King’s track, “Red Door,” where Hinds’ perfectionism shone through, requiring him to lay down an impressive 278 takes before he was satisfied.

Tragically, Hinds passed away in a motorcycle accident on August 20, 2025, leaving a significant void in the rock community. King’s memories of their time together serve as a testament to their enduring friendship.
