In a recent interview, Europe’s frontman Joey Tempest shared his thoughts on the band’s iconic hit, “The Final Countdown,” 40 years after its release. The track, which debuted in the U.S. in May 1986, reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since amassed over 1.4 billion views on YouTube.
Tempest revealed that he finally asked his bandmates if they enjoy performing the song live. To his delight, they all expressed their love for it. He noted, “It’s a strange relationship… it has its own life.” Interestingly, while they thrive on the energy it brings during performances, none of the band members listen to it outside of concerts.
The song’s famous keyboard line was inspired by David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” and Tempest originally envisioned it as an opening for their live shows. He reflected on how the track connects with audiences, saying, “It doesn’t matter if we play a family festival in Denmark or a heavy metal festival in Germany. People give us energy back.”
As Europe gears up for their new album, “Come This Madness,” fans can expect to hear this classic live, continuing to energize crowds around the world.
